Rita Evelyn Spencer papers, [ca. 1907-1931].

The collection contains the papers of Rita Evelyn Spencer from circa 1907 to 1931. The papers include photographs of friends and family, two photograph albums, and a scrapbook from Talladega College. The scrapbook, probably compiled in 1930-1931, includes invitations, handwritten recollections of college activities and friends, programs, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The photograph albums, dating from 1922-1930, contain photographs of friends and family, Talladega College campus buildings, and photographs of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. The collection also includes a number of photographic portraits of unidentified African Americans, unidentified elementary school pictures of African American children from circa 1907, a Talladega College pennant, and a 1930 commencement program from James Spencer's graduation from Howard University.

Rita Evelyn Stoney Spencer was an African American teacher and the daughter of Pauline E. Stoney and Frank Bryan Stoney. She graduated from Talladega College in 1930 and taught for a year in Winston-Salem, North Carolina before marrying Dr. James Lorenzo Spencer, a graduate of Howard University, on June 21, 1931.
